The city of Brno has a rich penal history, especially associated
with Špilberk Castle, which is a typical dominant of this
Moravian metropolis. The remand prison was built in Brno-Bohunice
in the year 1956 and serves as a detention facility for
detained men, women and juveniles. In the framework of the
above facility, there were established sections of moderated
regimen and for juvenile delinquents. The entire accommodation
capacity is 580, of which 268 places are designed for
remand and 312 for imprisonment.
The imprisonment is served there by inmates placed into
a supervised prison, and all of them are employed within the
prison with the capacity of 93. Besides those placed for a fi -
xed term, accommodated are also prisoners in transit (those
starting imprisonment or being escorted to other courts, etc.).
In the Remand Prison Brno, there is also a section for imprisonment
with a guarded zone. The capacity is 10 places and
the section is designed for prisoners studying at institutions of
higher learning (universities, etc.). In the Remand Prison Brno,
592 employees and members of the Prison Service (PSCR) are
employed. Of them, 113 are members of Judicial Guard and
288 are members of Prison Guard.
In 1997, a prison hospital in Brno Remand Prison was opened.
It comprises a rehabilitation pavilion, a specialised section
(including internal, infection, intermediate and follow-up
medical care units) and a psychiatric pavilion. The prison hospital
has a capacity of 131 beds.
On 15 September 2005 the hospital was expanded, when
new premises opened in the nearby village of Rapotice. The
object is located in the distance of 30 km west of town. It is a
large area of almost 100 hectares occupied until 2003 by an
air defence rocket base of the Czech Army. The fi rst convicts
placed under supervision were brought into that facility at the
beginning of September 2006 and have been employed there,
e.g., in a courtyard group, in a cleaning group, in the kitchen,
or in maintenance. The area contains an accommodation block
as well as an administration building with medical centre, a
canteen, a gymnasium and a culture hall. Since the middle
of 2007, a new outdoor shooting range has been made available
for the purposes of service preparation. In future, the
vast area can offer various possible uses of storage facilities,
former bunkers, etc. In October 2007, extensive construction
work started with the purpose of reaching a continuous accommodation
capacity of 450 places in the prison for convicts
under supervision.
Persons who have been sentenced to a term of imprisonment
under supervision and external guarding are assigned work within
the remand prison. Free time is reserved for leisure pursuits,
which take the form of a wide variety of clubs. There are,
for example, language, aquarist, modelling, sports, drama and
cooking clubs. The range of leisure activities on offer is constantly
expanding. There has been a fl ourishing ceramics club
in the juvenile remand unit since 2003. The remand prison also
enjoys visits from representatives of various churches. A chaplain
of the prison clerical care is available to the detainees and
convicts one day in a week. The Outreach Association (Sdružení
Podané ruce) has, as part of the Drugs Services project,
contacted and offered help to drug users. Convicted prisoners
have had, since September 2004, the opportunity to improve
their qualifi cations through studies at the Faculty of Economics
and Management of Masaryk University, Brno. The studies take
place right on the premises of Brno Remand Prison.
The employees enjoy a rich and varied life in their free time,
which is contributed to, in a great extent, even by the prison.
Sporting activities, such as playing football, foot-net volleyball,
tennis, fi eld- and ice-hockey, etc. The premises of Remand Prison
Brno offer to sports enthusiasts a well-equipped fi tness
room and a tennis court. The prison staff can attend, with a fi -
nancial contribution by the Prison’s Fund of Cultural and Social
Needs, theatre performances and other cultural events. The
prison has its own recreation facility near the Vranov water
dam and follows the tradition of organising summer and winter
camps for employees’ children every year.
